Dr. John Stewart arrived in Port Perry and started practice with the Medical Associates in January 1975 after two years practicing Emergency Medicine in Kitchener-Waterloo. He and his wife had 2 sons, born in 1975 and 1977. He became involved in the community by joining the Borelians Community Theater and the Scugog Choral Society in 1975. In 1976, he took on the role of Chair of a steering committee to explore the possibility of developing a Big Brothers organization in Scugog. Following this, he became Founding President of the Scugog Big Brothers Association and served in that capacity until 1980, continuing to be a member of the Association until about 1996. That association continues today after amalgamation with Big Sisters and remains active until the present time. For many years, he was a concert sponsor for Town Hall 1873. In 1983, he served as President of a newly formed Parent Teacher Association at RH Cornish School.
Medically, his practice included office practice, hospital care, emergency care, obstetrics and nursing home care. He was Medical Director of the Community Nursing Home from 1985 until 2007. He has been a lecturer for the Rural Residency Program, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto using the Nursing Home setting to teach the importance of appropriate care for the elderly. He served as Chief of Staff for Community Memorial Hospital from 1978 to 1980 and again as Deputy Chief of Staff for Lakeridge Health Port Perry from 2004 to 2006. He served as Director of the Rural Health Services Program, Lakeridge Health Port Perry from 2004 to 2006.
In 1994, he served on a provincial committee to develop guidelines for the appropriate use of antibiotics. From that, he headed an implementation research project for the best use of these guidelines in the community setting. This project (Partners for Appropriate Anti-Infective Community Therapy, PAACT) was able to demonstrate significant improved behavior change within the broad community and the findings were published in the Canadian Family Physician (April 2000). This study garnered worldwide attention, and he was invited to present at a workshop for the “European Conference on Antibiotic Use” in Brussels in November 2001. Surprisingly, the PAACT project was the only project invited to the conference from outside Europe.
He has served on numerous provincial, national and international advisory boards, particularly in the areas of antibiotic use, cholesterol treatment and diabetes. He continues to be a member of the Ontario Anti-infective Review Panel and has acted as reviewer for many other guidelines in other clinical areas.
He has been a Peer Assessor for the College of Physicians and Surgeons since 2009 and was a Lead for a group of about 12 Peer Assessors for family practice. From 2022 until present, he is a peer assessor for GP psychotherapy. In addition, he was on a small committee developing updated standards for the quality assessment of Ontario Family Physicians in office practice.
He has been a Director for the Community Memorial Hospital Foundation since 1999 and served as President (2012 – 2015), leaving the foundation a short time later. He was co-chairman of the “Your Hospital, Your Future” $3.5M fundraising campaign. Port Perry Hospital has found itself vulnerable to program closures over the years – especially in the area of obstetrics. Dr. Stewart has been at the forefront on many occasions leading the fight to keep full services available for our community.
In addition to a few other awards, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.
Although he no longer has his family practice, he continues a semiretired practice of analytical hypnotherapy and regression therapy. At one point, he taught an introductory program in Meditation with Bette Hodgins. (Find Peace of Mind).
